This big private reserve, some 400 km2 in size, is part of Lakipia. It is only 40 km west of the summit of Mount Kenya, making it the reserve closest to this beautiful mountain where you can see all the classic big game animals.
On clear mornings you can clearly see if it has been snowing on the highest peaks – snow that normally melts during the day. Ol Pejeta can offer an impressively large and varied population of big game, broadly speaking here you can find everything your heart desires. All the big predators are well represented, even the rare African wild dog, as well as the really big animals such as elephant, black- and white rhinoceros, hippopotamus, giraffe and buffalo. The range of antelope species present is also wide, while there is also a very rich and varied bird life here. Here you can also see a number of different primates, and it is one of the best places to see the beautiful, long limbed, Patas monkey.
In a special, fenced-in, area you can also see a large community of chimpanzees. They are not native to Kenya, but are animals that have been confiscated from animal smugglers, who captured them in the countries further to the west, and brought them here. Here they can live a free, semi natural existence in safe surroundings, as it would not be possible to release any of them where they came from.
On top of an African safari in daylight in this private reserve you can also undertake a night safari using spot lights. It is also possible to go on a walking safari with experienced guides.
