Ankarana Nature Reserve

In the most northernly province of Madagascar you can find Ankarana National Park, consisting of spectacular limestone mountains, with sharp sharp ridges and jagged peaks - known on Madagascar as tsingys, created by the large amounts of rainfall here eroding the bedrock.

The parks was created to protect 183km2 of tropical jungles, deciduous forest, deep ravines and underground caves and rivers - including some of the largest such features in the whole of Africa.

Ankarana has one of the world’s highest densities of primates, crowned lemurs, Sandford’s brown lemur, Perrier’s black lemur and dwarf lemurs are particularly common. Here it is also possible to see predators such as fossa, mongooses and civet as well as the hedgehog-like tenrec. More than 100 species of birds share the skies with 14 species of bat and flying-foxes (fruit-bats), that live colonies in the huge labyrinth of caves here. There are also around 50 species of reptile living in the park, including the world’s only cave-living crocodile.

Many fantastic paths have been laid out in the park, making it an ideal place to enjoy walks through the varied nature of the area, which I addition to its rich animals life is home to 350 different species of plant.
