The Fish River Canyon is the largest canyon in Africa, and is said to be the second biggest in the world after the Grand Canyon in the USA. This huge ravine is some 100km long, up to 27km wide, and in places nearly 550m deep. It is located in the south of Nambia, a good 600km south of the capital city of Windhoek, and runs down to join the Orange River on the border with South Africa.
Except for baboons, few large mammals are seen here, rather it is the incredible landscape and fantastic views that bring people here. There are a number of hot springs in the area, including at Ai-Ais on the floor of the canyon, where there is a popular Spa. It is possible to drive down to the floor of the canyon from the north, and here you can swim in a series of river pools during the dry season. It is possible to go on a beautiful, but physically challenging, multi-day trek along the canyon floor. Canoeing on the Orange River close to the mouth of the Fish River Canyon is another spectacular possibility.
