Drakensberg

Close to South Africa’s east coast you will find the Drakensberg Mountains, an area that includes the independant state of Lesotho. The highest point in the Drakensberg range is Thabana Ntlenyana at 3482 meters above sea level.

The national parks of uKhahlamba and Drakensberg are both also part of this district, which in the year 2000 was designated as a World Heritage Site. There are many good reasons why it was given status; in the mountains there are many caves, in at least 500 of which have you can find incredible rock paintings made by the San people who lived here thousands of years ago, which bear witness to the San’s way of life and religious beliefs. The landscape of this area is unique, it is renowned for its mix of dramatic features and incredible beauty. It is also home to a number of rare, endemic bird-and plant species that can be found nowhere else.

It is also worth noting that the parks are included in the Ramsar-Convention’s  areas of protected wetlands. A visit to this wild and unspoilt area is an absolute must for discerning safari guests who would like to travel through this part of South Africa.

The best known national park in this mountain range is the Royal Natal National Park, which is perhaps most known for being the source of the River Tugela, and being the location of the Tugela Falls,  which is the second highest waterfall in the world.
