Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam botanical gardens

The Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam gardens are truly extraordinary. The gardens can be found just to the north of Mauritius’ capital Port Louis in the Pamplemousse district and are well worth a visit. The entrance price for these beautiful gardens may be very modest, but the gardens themselves are not.

Around 300 years ago the gardens were created as a private garden for a French governor, but were later adopted as Mauritius’ national botanical garden. The gardens cover an enormous area, making it difficult to see everything on a single visit. There are over 650 species of flowering plants and trees, including the famous baobab trees, rare palms, giant water lilies and much, much more. One of the gardens most popular attractions are the 85 different types of palm trees, that have been brought here from all over the world. To make the most of your visit here it can be a good idea to ally yourself to one of the gardens very friendly guides. They can be hired for a very reasonable sum, and they are full of valuable information about all the different plants and trees you will see on your visit.

Highlights:

  • More that 650 species of plants and trees
  • Guided tours around the botanical gardens
