Lake Nakuru National Park

Some 150 km northwest of Nairobi lies the most visited, and perhaps the most famous, of Kenya’s five central lakes, the saltwater Lake Nakuru, which is totally surrounded by the national park of the same name. The lake is best known for its flamingos, and until recently it has been one of the best places in the world to see them as they were always there but due to higher waterlevels most of the flamingos have gone to Lake Bogoria and Lake Natron.

The relatively small, and fenced, park is home to good populations of both black and white rhinoceros, which are well taken care of here. It is amongst the best rhinoceros parks on the continent, and seeing white rhino is nearly guaranteed here while black rhinos are seen frequently, but without the same ”guarantee”.

The park also have an incredibly dense populations of leopards, which are often seen, as is the local pride of lions. In addition you can see a wide range of herbivores, of which the rare but here easily seen Rothschild´s giraffe is the most prominent. There are also good numbers of buffalo, zebra and waterbuck, as well as three species of monkeys. Despite the parks rather limited area of around 200 km2 you can see the majority of the biggest and most well known animals around the lake – but not the very biggest of them all, namely elephant.

Highlights:

   •      Rare, animal species such as Rothschild´s giraffe and black- and white rhinoceros

   •      Fantastic birdlife along the shores of the lake

   •      Perhaps the world’s most dense population of the elegant, but shy big cat, the leopard

High season : January to March and July to October
