Kamiesberg Mountain Pass

Kamiesberg Mountain Pass is an area of granite mountain country with very sandy soils, lying in central South Africa near Kamieskroon in Namaqualand. The Kamiesberg Mountain Pass stretches for around 140 km from Garies in the south to Springbok in the north.

Kamiesberg is unusual amongst desert regions in that rainfall here is relatively predictable and frosts are rare. Rains here are often accompanied by heavy falls of dew and fog. During the summer temperatures can reach 40 °C.

The region is considered to be one of the top 25 global hotspots for plant biodiversity, and part of the area was given protected status back in the year  1999, solely for the purpose of preserving the area’s rich wildlife and many colourful wild flowers.
