Jozani Forest

If you would like to enjoy the beautiful, lush tropical vegetation of Zanzibar and go looking for the unusual species of monkeys that lives on the archipelago, then a visit to the Jozani Forest, located in the island’s center, is an absolute must. Jozani Forest is part of the Jozani Chwaka National Park, and is the last remaining area of original ancient forest left on Zanzibar. The area was given protection as a nature reserve in the 1960s , and with an area of 25.12 km2 Jozani Forest not only represents the original nature of the island, it is also home to the rare red colobus monkey, that can only be seen in West Africa and Zanzibar.

Many wild monkeys can be seen in Jozani Forest in their natural habitat, the best way of seeing them is by keeping a careful watch on the treetops, as this is where the different species of monkey spend their time. It is a great idea to join a guided walk in this verdant forest, your local guide will tell you a great deal about the forests many different tree species and its various mammals.  It is also sensible to make sure you don’t have loose items hanging off you, the rare red colobus monkeys find such things absolutely fascinating and will often come a bit too close to the forest’s visitors to satisfy their curiosity.
